TOPIC: *PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT vs PRAYING IN TONGUES*
People often confuse the concept of "Praying in the spirit" with the concept of "praying in tongues".
*Jude 1 vs 20-21* says, "But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the holy Spirit." *21* "Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life"
Jude's exhortations in this verse echo the Apostle Paul's instructions to the Ephesian believers: to use the sword of the Spirit, God's Word, in fighting evil forces, and to pray in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17–18).
But prayer, inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit, should also accompany one's loyalty to God's Word.
The above scripture is often confused with praying in tongues. *PRAYING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT A DIRECT REFERENCE TO THE GIFT OF TONGUES*
It's a reference to praying in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
*SO, TO PRAY IN THE SPIRIT IS TO DESIRE IN AGREEMENT WITH HEAVEN. TO SPEAK ALOUD THOSE PETITIONS WHICH ORIGINATE IN THE WILL OF THE FATHER*
True prayer in the spirit begins in union with God. Praying in the Holy Spirit is praying in harmony with the will of the Holy Spirit, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
So, you're are praying according to his desires, and empowered by his strength. *PRAYING ACCORDING TO THE WILL AND WORD OF GOD*
Praying in tongues is a form of praying in the spirit, but praying in the spirit is a larger concept than just praying in tongues.
*PRAYING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT = THE UMBRELLA*
*PRAYING IN TONGUES = SUB CATEGORY OF PRAYING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT*
