SIN, TRANSGRESSION, AND INIQUITY
Sin, it turns out, is violating God's law. So, to bring this all together, sin is what happens when you violate God's law; transgression is the actual act of violating the law, and iniquity is the dirtiness that lives in you when you've engaged in sin by transgressing God's law.

All of these words are different angles of one and the same reality: our disobedience to God, our againstness, our hatred, our diversion from Him.

SIN.

In the Bible, sin is any thought, action, or feeling that goes against God's will or standards. It can also be defined as breaking God's laws.

“For ALL that is in the WORLD, the [1] lust of the flesh, and [2] the lust of the eyes, and [3] the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

The lust of the flesh is an excessive desire for physical pleasures or material possessions at the expense of morality and spiritual values. It's often used in a cautionary way.

"Lust of the eyes" is a phrase primarily referring to the sinful desire to possess or covet things based solely on their visual appeal, like material possessions, wealth, or outward appearances, essentially meaning a strong craving for something you see that you don't actually need or can't afford; it's considered a temptation that comes from the world, not from God.

"Pride of life" refers to excessive pride, arrogance, and self-centeredness that stems from a love of the world. It's a sin that Jesus condemned.

*Biblical references*
The phrase "pride of life" appears in the Bible in 1 John 2:16.
The temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden is an example of the pride of life.
The temptation of Christ in the wilderness is another example.
Examples of pride of life
Bragging about yourself
Being competitive and wanting to win at all costs
Having a desire for vengeance
Being stressed, despondent, or anxious
Seeing yourself as too good to do certain tasks.

*Bible verses about sin*
"Sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4)
"All have sinned" (Romans 3:23)
"Sin leads to death" (Romans 6:23)
"But your iniquities [sins] have separated you from your God" (Isaiah 59:2)

*Types of sin*

*Sins of commission:* Doing something evil

*Sins of omission:* Failing to do something good

*Sins of attitude:* Such as false pride, envy, or hatred

The Bible teaches that people can restore fellowship with God by confessing their sins and asking for forgiveness. *This is REPENTANCE*

Jesus need not die but once for the sins of mankind, freeing us from the law of sin and death and setting us free to live a righteous life in Christ.

TRANSGRESSION.

In the Bible, transgression is the act of breaking a law, rule, or agreement, or violating the trust of others. It can also refer to sinning against God.

It is the act or process of breaking a law or moral rule. We are made for the glory of God, but sin causes us to fall short of the mark. Transgression has the very basic idea of crossing the line. God has given us His law, and we cross the line.

Some common synonyms of sin are crime, offense, scandal, and vice. While all these words mean "a transgression of law," sin implies an offense against moral or religious law.

INIQUITY.

Iniquity is a violation of the right or duty that mankind is under obligation to do. In the bible, the terms, sin, and iniquity, are often used interchangeably.

An iniquity can also be a wicked act and immoral conduct or practice. These are harmful or offensive to society and, especially to God.

Sin vs Transgression vs Iniquity.

Sin, it turns out, is violating God's law. So, to bring this all together, sin is what happens when you violate God's law; transgression is the actual act of violating the law, and iniquity is the dirtiness that lives in you when you've engaged in sin by transgressing God's law.

*Psalm 51 1* says: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

*Isaiah 59:2* says: But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

*In the Bible, workers of iniquity are those who practice evil and wickedness.*

*Matthew 7:22-23* says: 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

*Matthew 24:12* says:

12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
